Natural hair is usually dry especially towards the ends. This is because, due to the coily/curly structure of natural hair, sebum does not distribute easily & evenly throughout the hair. To combat this, natural hair must be moisturised on a regular basis, focusing on the ends as these tend to be more drier than the hair closer to the scalp where sebum is produced.
- LOOSE HAIR STYLES FOR COILY/CURLY HAIR TYPES
Sometimes it feels good to just have your hair loose and let it blow in the wind, however If your hair is prone to tangling you may want to do this less often or wear stretched out protective styles like twists instead. Avoid going to sleep with loose hair as this promotes matting and more tangles.
- KEEPING PROTECTIVE STYLES FOR LONGER THAN NECESSARY
While protective styles are beneficial for protecting the hair from manipulation and environmental factors, keeping the hair for longer than necessary may cause matting and tangling which may lead to breakage. Renew protective styles on a regular basis to stretch new growth, remove shed hair and tangles and thoroughly moisturise the hair.
- EXCESSIVE USE OF HARSH CHEMICALS (RELAXERS)
Chemicals strip the hair and compromise the natural structure of the hair. This leads to drier, thinner and weaker hair which will become more vulnerable to tangling. Avoiding chemicals is best to preserve the natural structure and integrity of the hair.
Excessive use of heat has been proven to damage hair as heat 'burns' the hair. Heat makes the hair weaker and drier making it prone to tangling and knotting. It is advised to use heat in moderation and always use effective heat protectants whenever heat is used.
